Do You Need an Insurance Background to Start a Sales Career in San Antonio?
What Farmers District 46 agencies look for in new sales producers, how licensing works in Texas, and where a first sales job in San Antonio can lead.

No. You don't need an insurance background to start a sales career with a Farmers District 46 agency in San Antonio. You need a license, a work ethic, and the willingness to be coached. In District 46 we hire for character and coachability, then we train the skill. The license is the gateway to everything else, and the rest is learned on the job.
What Agencies in District 46 Actually Look For
Most people who ask this question are coming from somewhere else: retail, restaurants, the military, a call center, a classroom, a job that stopped growing. That's normal. Very few people grow up planning a career in insurance sales.
When an agency owner in District 46 looks at a candidate, the questions are simple. Are you hungry? Are you coachable? Will you show up and do the work when nobody is watching?
Product knowledge, quoting systems, and carrier rules can all be taught. Character can't. That's why we hire for character and coachability first and train the skill second. Credentials, capital, and experience matter in some situations. For a first sales role, one opportunity, earned and then re-earned, can go a long way.
How I Started With No Insurance Background
I know this one personally. In 2009 I was a full-time college student making calls in a Farmers agency in Overland Park, Kansas. The job was telemarketing. Nobody called it a sales development role back then.
Then I got licensed in Kansas and moved into sales. I spent more than two years as an agency team member before I moved into the district side of the business.
I'm not telling that story because it's special. I'm telling it because it's common. Opportunity came before credentials for me, and that's why District 46 builds paths for hungry, coachable people today.
Getting Licensed in Texas Is the First Step
Selling insurance in Texas requires a license from the Texas Department of Insurance. That's the one hard requirement, and it's the gateway to everything else in this career.
Is the exam hard? No. But you do have to study. Most people we work with study around a full-time job, so plan your evenings and your weekends and treat it like a short-term project with a finish line.
Once you knock out the license, you're no longer asking whether you can do this work. You're learning how to do it well.
What the First Months of the Job Look Like
The first months are about building habits, not chasing a big month. In District 46 the floor is 5 new-business quotes a day for every dedicated licensed sales producer. That's a floor, not a goal.
Why start there? Because quoting is a leading indicator. Sales are the result. The work that creates the result happens earlier: creating opportunities, generating quotes, following up, and having real conversations with people about their coverage.
A new producer who hits the activity standard gives the agency something to coach. If the activity is there, an owner can work on everything else. If it isn't, there's nothing to diagnose yet.
You'll also learn the systems: the quoting tools, the follow-up rhythm, and how the agency tracks its work. Ask questions early. The producers who grow fastest are usually the ones who ask the most and then put the answer to work the same day.
Why San Antonio and South Central Texas Work for New Producers
San Antonio is a big, growing city surrounded by growing communities across South Central Texas. Families buy homes, buy cars, start businesses, and need someone they can call. That's a lot of people who need a real person on the other end of the phone.
District 46 has agency owners across San Antonio and South Central Texas. That gives a new producer options: different agencies, different teams, and different neighborhoods.
You don't need to know the insurance business to start here. You do need to know your community and be willing to serve it.
Where an Entry-Level Sales Role Can Lead
A first sales job is a start, not a ceiling. Some producers stay in sales and build a long career there. Others want to run their own agency one day.
For people on the ownership path, District 46 runs two programs: Protégé, where you work under a mentor agency and launch your own later, and Associate, where you build toward ownership under district mentorship. District 46 targets launch in 9 months or less for its Protégé and Associate programs. That's our operating target, not a Farmers guarantee, and both programs are subject to current Farmers terms and approval.
Either way, the starting point is the same. Get licensed. Learn to quote and follow up. Build the habits that last.
