Paths to Ownership

Multiple Ways to Build Your Business.

District 46 supports four paths to agency ownership and growth in San Antonio and South Central Texas — matched to where you are right now.

01Direct Ownership

Build Your Agency.

For: Experienced professionals ready to start from scratch.

Key considerations include:

  • Relevant business, sales, or leadership experience
  • Applicable licensing requirements
  • Capital requirements as defined by program guidelines

This path allows qualified candidates to begin building their agency with ownership responsibilities from day one. District 46 provides training, business planning guidance, and ongoing support as you establish your book of business in San Antonio and South Central Texas.

02Agency Acquisition

Acquire an Agency.

For: Candidates who want to step into an existing book of business.

This path offers:

  • Purchase of an existing agency's book of business
  • An established client base and existing agency infrastructure
  • Subject to availability and applicable program approval

Acquisition opportunities allow qualified buyers to assume an existing Farmers Insurance agency — clients, history, and all. Availability varies, and requirements differ from the build path. When openings arise in the District 46 footprint, we connect motivated candidates with those opportunities directly.

03Protege / Associate Program

Development Path to Ownership.

For: Individuals who want a structured, mentored path before assuming full ownership.

Through this path, candidates:

  • Work inside or alongside an established District 46 agency
  • Complete a defined sales production goal under mentorship
  • May qualify for ownership with capital requirements waived or reduced upon graduation

Two options exist within the development path. The Protege program places candidates inside a mentor agency as a W-2 employee. The Associate program is structured as an independent 1099 relationship. Both share the same milestone-based graduation model — hit the production goal, earn your way to agency ownership without the usual capital barrier.

04Agency Team Roles

Join an Agency Team.

For: Candidates interested in a professional insurance career within a team environment.

Agency team positions typically involve:

  • Licensed roles in client service, sales support, or operations
  • Working within an active District 46 agency
  • Building industry experience with potential to explore ownership over time

Not everyone is ready to open an agency on day one — and that's a legitimate starting point. Agency team roles provide direct exposure to how a Farmers Insurance agency runs. For candidates who perform and develop, an ownership path may become available from within the agency environment.
